Do you get the years of Dentistry school and a clone of yourself to examination yourself? Probably not but you have a toothbrush and floss. So I don’t need to go for a check right? Clearly, you got an amazing routine for cleaning my teeth! Sadly a proper cleaning route only helps. It’s doesn’t prevent any issues with your teeth.

Check up routine!

When you get to the dentist, check in at the front desk with your receptionist. Your receptionist will let your dental hygienist. If your dental hygienist isn’t ready for you yet, you can have a seat in our beautiful waiting room. We got lots for you to read and things for kids to do! Then we will come to get you and bring you to a check-up room. Here you will sit on our special chair. We will give you sunglasses and a bib, to make you more comfortable and clean.

Cleaning and Polishing

Cleaning and polishing are very important. Teeth collect tartar that you aren’t able to remove with your toothbrush. The dental hygienist will use different dental instruments to remove it. They also remove any plaque or stains. Most stores sell plaque scrapers but it’s not a good idea to use them. Dental hygienist’s get training to use them through college or university. Plaque scrapers can damage your gums if they are missed used. You’re also at risk of infections if you cut anything in your mouth.

After the dental hygienist is done doing the cleaning and polishing. They will be able to update you on your teeth. This is very important because if you have a chip or cavity, they need to fix it asap. Often cavities grow in chipped teeth because it’s harder for toothbrushes to get into the chip. Of course food as no issue getting into the chips. We don’t want to let any cavities grow or get worse because you could lose your tooth. Your dental hygienist will also tell you if you’re doing a good job on brushing and floss. If your struggling they will give you tips to improve your teeth cleaning routine.

Time for your dentist to come look at you, in very funky glasses! Your lovely dental hygienist will fill your dentist in on how you’re doing. If they found anything that is concerning, they will tell your dentist. If you do have any cavities or chips your dentist will say what treatment needs to be done to fix it. If you have any cavities or chips your dentist will tell you to book an appointment. Your dental hygienist will give you a little something to help you keep your teeth clean till your next visit.

For time to time, you need to get an x-ray done. This won’t be done at every annual teeth checkup. Your dental hygienist will decide if you need the x-ray but don’t worry, it doesn’t mean that something is wrong. X-rays show if any of your teeth are decaying, any gum diseases, or other issues. Your dental hygienist will give you something to bite down on during the x-ray. Dental x-rays are my favourite type of x-ray because they look so cool! You get to see the roots of your teeth!

What should you do to get the most out of your checkup?

If you had any new health problem, such as diabetes or on new medication since your last visit. Do you have a new family doctor? Make sure you let your dentist know. Your dentist needs to keep up to date on all your health issues, just like your doctor. If you have dental anxiety, let us know! Dental anxiety is very common, we will make sure your comfortable throughout the whole checkup. Have you suffered any pain, sensitivity, or a suspicious lump on your teeth or gums? Tell your dentist right away. This way we can take care of it before starting our normal checkup routine.

What if I don’t go for my annual checkup?

We want to see your beautiful smile to stay beautiful! Just imagine you chipped your tooth in a spot that you’re unable to see. Now your going months with that chip. Food has gotten into that chip. Now it’s not just a chip. It’s a cavity. Your skipping more annual checkups. Now it’s not just a cavity. That cavity has taken over the whole inside of your tooth. You feel the pain but don’t see anything wrong. This often people find out they have a decayed tooth.

No chip? There are many reasons to go for checkups. Tartar builds up fast. Did you know, tartar contain large amounts of bacteria? All that bacteria is sitting on your teeth and gums. Have you heard of gingivitis? Gingivitis is when your gums become red, swollen, and bleed easily. It is caused by the tartar builds up, this is why you need your dental hygienist to do the cleaning and polishing.

Effects of bad gums
  • Formation of deep pockets between teeth and gums
  • Gums that bleed during and after toothbrushing
  • Loose or shifting teeth
  • Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
  • Receding Gums
  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
